Some effects of ethrel on plants from Cucurbitaceae [family]

The effect of the foliar application of Ethrel was investigated in four cultivated species that belong to Cucurbitaceae family - cucumber (four genotypes), melon (three genotypes), summar squash and water melon (two genotypes each). In the open-field production, the plants were treated with the water solution of Ethrel (2-chloroethanephosphonic acid) at 0.024%, 0.048% and 0.096% concentrations, while the control was treated with distilled water. Initial treatments were applied when the plants were at the 2-3 true-leaf stage. All plants were re-treated, at the same concentration, after five days. The stunting of the plants was the first noticeable symptom of the effect of this ethylene realiser. In some cucumber genotypes (J-35 and V-83 lines) and watermelon (7a and T-18 lines) stunting was permanent, which depended on the applied concentration of Ethrel, whereas in other genotypes, this occurrence was temporary (S-052A melon and MM-76 cucumber line). Ethrel caused a strong tendency of developing female flowers only in monoecious melon, cucumber and summer squash genotypes. The investigated gynoecious cucumber lines, under certain ecological conditions, developed a few male flowers. Ethrel eliminated their occurrence in the period of about three weeks. In the hermaphrodite melon lines, the treatment had the effect of reduction of the number of male flowers. Hermaphrodite flowers on these melon lines developed normally.
