The growth performance of broilers in two different non-industrial breeding systems

Bearing in mind certain established European Union regulations on non-industrial chicken meat production, as well as specificities of breeding in our conditions, adequate experimental investigations were conducted in order to compare the results on the fattening of broilers in two different non-industrial breeding systems. The one was the system of extensive fattening in a chicken pen, and the other one was the free-range system of breeding. The fattening in both breeding systems lasted 56 days. Examination of weight gain (by individual measuring of all the chickens once a week) as well as of vitality of chickens was conducted during the fattening period. The difference obtained in the average body weight of the two groups of chickens was not statistically significant. As regards the chickens vitality, it was determined that lower mortality (2.08) was recorded with the chickens raised extensively in the chicken pen than with the group of chickens bred using the free range system (4.16).
