The effect of nitrogen concentrations (2,5 and 10 mM) on several physiological processes and parameters in young sugar beet plants (genotypes: Darija, Sara, Lara and NS-Hy-41 R) was investigated in semi-controlled conditions, in a glass houses. The highest dry weight, leaf area and NR activity were found in plants grown in the presence of 5 mM N. Chlorophyll a and b content significantly depended on nitrogen provision. Free proline content and stomatal diffusive resistance declined with the increase in N concentration, while water deficiency increased. Sugar beet genotypes differently reacted on N content in the nutrient media. For example, Darija and NS-Hy-41 R had higher capacity for nitrogen reduction than the other three genotypes.
