A number of parasitic fungi are causal agents of leaf and stem spots of sunflower. Most important and most harmful agents of leaf spot are Alternaria helianthi, the agent of brown spot, and Septoria helianthi, the agent of gray spot. They are not frequent on sunflower stems. Most frequent and most harmful agents of stem spot are Diaporthe helianthi (anamorph Phomopsis helianthi), the agent of brown-gray stem spot, and Leptosphaeria lindquistii (anamorph Phoma macdonaldi), the agent of black spot of sunflower. They are not frequent on sunflower leaves. In our country, leaf and stem spot of sunflower are economically harmful diseases, which may cause significant yield reductions in years favourable for their development. The above parasitic fungi produce symptoms on all aboveground parts of the sunflower plant, especially on leaves and stems. Agrotechnical and chemical measures are used to control these diseases.
