Root, stem and head rot of sunflower are caused by a number of phytopathogenic fungi. These fungi parasitize all parts of the sunflower plant, especially the root, stem, leaf and head. Most of these fungi cause a destruction of infected plant parts, followed by a complete destruction of entire plants. Under favourable conditions, these pathogens cause vast economic damage, which are manifested as reduced yield and quality of seed and reduced oil percentage in seed. The most frequent causal agents of root, stem, and head rots are Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, the agent of white rot, Botrytis cinerea, the agent of gray rot, and Macrophomina phaseolina, the agent of charcoal rot.
