Damping-off is a disease that can affect almost all plants at the earliest stages of growth. It occurs in home gardens as well as commercial fields and greenhouses. Several fungi can cause this disease, including Rhizoctonia spp., Pythium spp., Phytophthora spp., Fusarium spp., and other. These fungi are found in practically all soils and pose a large threat to plant propagation. Losses due to damping-off can be severe and often appear as reduced stands in seed flats or rapid wilting and death of young seedlings. Prevention is the key to control damping-off and can be achieved by several methods. Preventive measures are based on eliminating fungi that cause damping-off by good sanitation or providing chemical or biological barriers to prevent the fungi from growing in the planting medium. Sterile planting media, optimal germination environment and biological or chemical seed treatments will minimize damping off.
