The influence of additional intrarow planting, type of rootstock and age of planting on productivity of apple production

The paper presents optional usage of intrarow spacing if planting is found inadequate in respect of vigour of particular cultivar and rootstock. Study of apple cv. Idared grafted on MM6 rootstock planted at 4.5 x 3.5 m (711.3 trees/ha) resulted in the following yields: 16-year-old planting gave 37,500 kg/ha whereas 13-year-old planting produced 32,143 kg/ha. Fruit weight was higher in older trees grafted on more vigorous rootstock (214.3 g), whereas both soluble solids content and ripeness rate were lower as compared to younger trees grafted on dwarfed rootstock (M 26). Older trees (8 years) of cv. Delbar Jubileum planted at another site gave 62,800 kg/ha (older trees), while younger ones (5 years) resulted in 18,637 kg/ha. Similar to cv. Idared, this cultivar recorded higher fruit weight in older trees as well as higher soluble solids content and ripeness rate, which was not found in cv. Idared.
