Virulence of Botrytis cinerea strains on two grapevine varieties in south-western Spain

Botrytis cinerea is a pathogenic fungus that causes grey mould disease in a wide range of hosts, including grapevine (Vitis vinifera). Virulence of ten strains of the fungus was analysed through bioassays on detached leaves of two grapevine varieties growing in south-western Spain; one of them used for making Sherry wines (V. vinifera var. palomino) and the other one growing in the same Sherry producing area, but not used for making Sherry (V. vinifera var. aledo). Differences in the size of lesions produced by different strains isolated from a given host were statistically significant. Variability in the level of virulence (estimated as the severity of the symptoms caused by each strain) depended not only on the variety of grapevine tested, but also on whether leaves were wounded or intact before inoculation. All strains produced botrydial, a metabolite directly involved in the appearance of the grey mould symptoms. Strains were variable regarding conidial size, determined by scanning electron microscopy, and number of nuclei within conidia, studied by fluorescence microscopy, but no significant relationships could be established between any of those characters and virulence on the tested grapevine varieties. None of these features were related to the geographic origin of the strains, year of isolation or the host source.
