Occurrence of major field crop pests in Vojvodina Province [Serbia] in 2006 and forecast for 2007

The occurrence and forecasting of the major field crops pests in the Vojvodina Province (Serbia) has been regularly reported since 1978. By inspection of soil samples from fields where cereals and sugar beet were grown in 2006, the following average number/square meter as recorded: 1.2 wireworms (Elateridae), 0.8 whitegrubs (Scarabaeidae), 0.9 caterpillars of Scotia spp., 0.0 adults of Zabrus tenebrioides, 0.16 adults of Bothynoderes punctiventris and 0.9 chrysalides of Mamestra spp. In late autumn, 9.4 adults/square meter of Senn pest (Eurygaster and Aelia), was found on overwintering sites. The number of Cotton bollworm (Helicoverpa armigera) increased in 2006, but injuries were insignificant. The number and injuries of ECB (Ostrinia nubilalis) were slightly higher to previous year, while the population density of the WCR (Diabrotica virgifera virgifera) was similar. During 2006 one of the major problems in plant production were rodents, particularly Cricetus cricetus, while during summer on soybean it was Vanessa cardui.
