The landscape-ecological aspects of sustainable development in the Polana Biosphere Reserve

For the purpose of a complex evaluation of sustainable development of the Polana BR (20079 ha, located on Polana stratovolcano, 1458 m, Central Slovakia) the following characteristics of geographical and socio-economic sphere were studied: relief types, Quaternary sediments, soil cover, climatic-geographical types, water balance of landscape, potential natural vegetation, structure of geo-ecological (naturallandscape) types, present landscape structures (forms of landscape use), geo-ecological, climatic-geographical and socio-economic types of environment, landscape types according to the occurrence of positive and negative elements in a human environment From the naturallandscape of Polana BR potentials the wood-producing and erosion control potentials, tourism potential and landscape potential for its economic use were analysed.
