Utilization of pineapple leaves or rice straw in total mixed ration for fattening cattle

Experiment was conducted to determine the effect of using pineapple leaves in total mixed ration (TMR) for fattening cattle, 12 male Brahman cattle with average initial weight of 248 kilograms were divided into 2 groups with 6 replications. Group 1 the cattle fed pineapple leaves in TMR, group 2 the cattle fed rice straw in TMR. The two total mixed rations had crude protein 12.5 percent, TDN 66 percent and crude fiber 16 percent given the rate of 2.5 percent by body weight. The feeding trial was lasted for 168 days, the finished steers were slaughtered to study carcass characteristics. The results showed that pineapple leaves can be used in total mixed ration for fattening cattle. The cattle fed pineapple leaves in TMR, and the cattle fed rice straw in TMR had average dairy gain were 0.97 and 0.95 kilogram/head/day, dry matter feed intake were 7.44 and 7.50 kilogram/head/day, feed efficiency were 7.67 and 7.89 and feed cost were 5,325 and 5,808 Baht/head, respectively which no significant differences (P GT 0.05).
