Effects of fallow and mungbean residues on soil properties and yield of the succeeding corn crop in a mungbean - corn cropping systems

This experiment was conducted on a sandy loam soil (Oxic Paleustult) at the experimental farm, Faculty of Agriculture, Khon Kaen University, in 2000. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of mungbean with either, pods removed and residues incorporated into the soil or all aboveground vegetation removed on soil properties and the yield of a succeeding corn crop compared with pre-corn fallow treatments, either with N or without N fertilizer applied to the corn. The soil incorporated treatment with mungbean residue increased both soil water movement and soil moisture content, but decreased soil bulk density. On average plots where mungbean residues were incorporated produced grain yields 24 and 10 percent higher than the pre-corn fallow (without N applied to corn) treatment and the mungbean residue removed treatment, respectively. However, the highest grain yield was obtained in the pre-corn fallow with N applied to corn at a rate of 50 kg N/ha. Soil incorporation of mungbean residues also increased the availability of soil P and K, and increase soil organic matter content and pH after corn harvest.
