Life history of fire spiny eel Mastacembelus erythrotaenia (Bleeker, 1850) in captivity was conducted in two aspects, i.e. breeding and rearing. In breeding aspect, induced spawning of fire spiny eel Mastacembelus erythrotaenia (Bleeker, 1850) was conducted by using synthetic hormone, Buserelin acetate and Domperidone injected to the fish then eggs were stripped by hand and mixed with milt from male fish. Egg type was adhesive egg. Eggs were incubated at water temperature 28 deg C and hatched out after 46 hours of fertilization. Embryo and fry development were described. The fry started to feed with Artemia nauplii at 5-6 days old. They were fed with various kinds of food at different stages: Artemia nauplii at 5-10 days old, Moina sp. at 11-20 days old, blood worm at 21-35 days old, Turbifex sp. and blood worm (Chilomonid sp.) at 35-50 days old and small shrimp after 50 days. Rearing experiments were conducted by comparing two kinds of feed (Turbifex and blood worm) and three kinds of aquarium substrate (plain ground, fine sand and rough sand). The results showed that there were no different in growth rate by using two kinds of food and the fry which reared in plain ground aquarium had sighificantly higher growth rate and higher survival rate than other treatments at 95 percent confidential level.
