Researches on commodity-chains and comparative advantages of key farm products

In the recent years, Vietnam agriculture has been under the process of integrating into world market. To evaluate comparative advantages and competitiveness power, a series of researches on commodity-chains and comparative advantages of key farm products in Vietnam have been conducted by Institute of Agricultural Economics (IAE). In the course of performing these researches, qualitative and quantitative methods and supply-demand equilibrium models were used. In this paper, the author intends to sum up different research approaches, research methodologies and main research results. At the same time, a number of indicators that were used to assess competitiveness power, forecasted potential supply and demand as well as prices at equilibrium level of farm products such as rice, coffee and sugar are introduced. The paper also compares Vietnam's farm commodities with those produced in the neighboring countries and presents both advantages and disadvantages of Vietnam farm products. Benefits gained by diferent partners through farm trades on tea, coffee and sugar are also analyzed. All research results have now been published into books or scientific papers and submitted to management officials and key policy makers for designing suitable policies on management and development of Vietnam agriculture.
