The purpose of the paper is to reveal the essence of the farming styles and to assess their applicability for research of behavior differences of agricultural producers. In all three parts of the paper is clarified the essence of the farming style, along with the criteria used for characterization and classification of agricultural producers in CAP conditions before and after the 2003 reforms. As for the conclusions, the concept that the farming styles might be assessed as a multifaceted concept with possibilities to combine criteria and approaches from different scientific areas is underlined. On the basis of the assessment of different classifications of agricultural producers is reached to the conclusion that the researches, which link the differences in the philosophy of agricultural producers predominantly with technologies or production intensity and with market connections and relationships or business scale prevail. Thus, they successfully explain the farming heterogeneity combining the achievements of productive economics, household economics and productive ecology. Such an approach is adequate to the state of European agriculture at the end of 20th century. The change of agrarian policy and the stimulation of technological practices in agriculture, which aim at protection of environment, lead a number of researchers to look for interrelations between the individual characteristics of agricultural producers and their technological choice, attitude towards nature and the use of agricultural holding resources for various purposes. To the criteria for characteristics of agricultural producers are added such ones, assessing the attitude towards the nature, environment, etc.
