Occurrence of sarcocystosis in domestic wild carnivoras and small ruminants in the Stara Zagora region

An examination was performed of faeces samples collected from 358 dogs - 48 jackals - 37 foxes - 39 cats and 5 wolfs by flotation methods for sporocysts excretion. By inspection of the body and microscopy of muscle samples by compressor method 545 sheep - 385 weaned lambs - 95 lambs - 189 goats and 85 kids were checked for sarcocysts. The extensity of the observed invasion in dogs was 5.3% and the greatest percentage 11.4% in shepherds dogs. The highest percentage of parasitism in wild carnivores was found in foxes – 10.8% followed by jackals – 6.2%. The examinations in cats showed 2.1% of sarcocystosis invasion. Investigations in sheep and goats showed an extensity of microcyst invasion of 100% in animals over one year of age and in lambs - weaned lambs - and kids under that age the extensity of the invasion was from 1.5% to 15%. Microcysts were found only in sheep with 10.69% to 38.18% extensity of the invasion. There was found an age dependence of the variability.
