Investigation of the soil samples magnetic characteristic from Bukhovo and Gorni Bogrov vicinities, Kremikovtsi region

Magnetometric investigation has been performed on 15 soil samples /4 soil profiles up to 100 cm of depth/ from a region with proved anthropogenic contamination /Kremikovtsi smelter region/. The following magnetic properties have been studied- magnetic susceptibility // frequency-dependent magnetic susceptibility /FD-%/ anhysteretic remanent magnetization /ARM/ isothermal remanent magnetization /SIRM/ thermo-magnetic analysis of the magnetic susceptibility /Curie points of the magnetic minerals/ – heating and cooling cycles /highest temperature of 700 оС/. The investigation purpose is to test this method applicability for heavy metal pollution establishment especially directed to specifying of contamination origin. As this method has some advantages in comparison with the standard methods this investigation could contribute to its validation and to extending the specter of analyzing methods. The obtained results lead to these conclusions. A relative enrichment of coarse magnetic particles probably with anthropogenic origin has been determined in the surface layers of all investigated profiles. Significant increasing of the content of ultrafine superparamagnetic particles in the metamorphic horizon of the studied Chromic Luvisols has been established. The conclusions about soil pollution summarized by the classic geochemical methods have also been confirmed by magnetometric investigation. The magnetic susceptibility as well as frequency-dependent magnetic susceptibility are fast and effective parameters for assessment of the anthropogenic soil pollution existence. It has been shown that soil magnetic susceptibility has the highest rate at the upper horizons of the profiles for which the concentrations of Zn and Pb exceed 2-3 times the permissible levels.
