Allelopathic effect of extracts from winter vetch /V. villosa Roth./ on germination and initial development of rye, wheat and oat seeds

Allelopathic effect of water extracts from vegetative and generative parts of winter vetch /Vicia villosa Roth./ at different concentrations on emergence and initial development of rye wheat and wintering oat seeds was studied under laboratory conditions. The biotest of Chon et al. /2003/ was used. As a result of the experiment an increasing inhibitory effect on the seed emergence and growth characteristics was found with increase of the extract concentration from 5 to 10 and 15%. There was an exception at 5% concentration of root biomass extract having a slight stimulatory effect on wheat germ and root development and on oat germ. The 5% concentration of root and stem extracts also exerted a stimulatory effect on oat seed emergence. The flowers and leaves had the highest allelopathic activity among the plant parts of vetch /corresponding with their high content of total phenols and cyanglycosides/ followed by green pods stems roots and seeds. The average values of the three cereal crops showed that the reduction of radicle and germ length as compared to the control was most pronounced for rye /by 58 and 50% respectively/ followed by wheat /by 54 and 48%/ and oat /by 44 and 41%/ which was determined by the different protein content in their grain. A strong negative correlation was found between the protein content in grain and the inhibitory effect on seed germination /r = -0.916/ length of root /r = -0.730/ and germ /r = -0.683/.
