Thirteen varieties of smooth-stalked meadow grass on the test rig

From spring 2004 until autumn 2006, the value for cultivation and use of thirteen varieties of smooth-stalked meadow grass (Poa pratensis L.) was tested by the federal research stations Agroscope Reckenholz-Tänikon ART and Agroscope Changins-Wädenswil ACW at seven experimental sites. The traits yield, juvenile development, general impression, competitive ability, resistance against diseases, winter hardiness, digestible organic matter, persistence and adaptation to higher altitudes were systematically assessed. The results were summarised in an index value. This index allowed for a general evaluation of the varieties. Two new breeds attained the index required for recommendation. Because of legal constraints, of these two varieties only the variety Likollo will be added to the List of Recommended Varieties of Forage Plants at present. The already recommended variety Monopoly, which was also tested, did not attain the index required for recommendation. However, in order to allow for a sufficient supply of smooth-stalked meadow grass seed to the Swiss market, Monopoly will remain on the list for the time being.
