Fertilizer rates effects on the growth and yield of several corn (Zea mays L.) varieties

The major problems of tropical soils are usually its poor nutrient status and fertilizer efficiency. Plant growth is inhibited by acid reaction and amount of nutrients supply. The aims of the study was (1) to investigate the effects of some fertilizer rates on the growth and yield of several corns and (2) to determine the formulate of fertilizer recommendation. The site of this study was located at farmer's farm in Payakumbuh, district, West Sumatra. This experiment was laid out in a split-plot design with 3 replications. The treatment of sub plot were five varieties. They were Bisi-2, C-3, Semar, Bisma, and Antasena. Three rates of fertilizer were (1) 250 kg Urea, 150 kg SP-36 and 100 kg KCl per hectare, (2) 300 kg Urea, 200 kg SP-36 and 100 kg KCl per hectare, and (3) 350 kg Urea, 250 kg SP-36 and 100 kg KCl per hectare. Plot size were 4 x 3.2 m and planting distance 50 x 80 cm. The plant protection were completely by used insectiside and fungicide. All of SP-36 and KCl doze and a third of urea doze were applied at planting times as based fertilizer. Two third of Urea doze were dressed at 30 days after planting. This study showed that the best formulation of fertilizer were 300 kg Urea, 250 kg SP-36, and 100 kg KCl/ha was given yield about 7.51 t/ha. This combination was able to recommended under farmer's land in this area. On the other hand, every variety was given the same responses to fertilizer rates. The variation of corn yields were 7.30-7.53 t/ha.
