[Effectiveness of Curcuma aeruginosa (temu ireng) on soil transmitted helminths infection]

The objectives of the study are: (1) to know the prevalence of soil-transmitted helminths infection among school children at Nusadadi Elementary School, (2) to know the cure rate of soil-transmitted helminths infection with 50 gr. Curcuma aeruginosa extract treatment, and (3) to know the comparison in effectiveness between C. aeruginosa and mebendazole. The method of the study was Randomized, Clinical Trial. The materials were 110 fecal samples of Nusadadi Elementary School children. Seventy four children (67.27 percent) infected by soil-transmitted helminths. The prevalence rates for Ascariasis, hook worm, and Trichuriasis were 16.36 percent, 34.55 percent, and 49.09 percent. Children who infected by soil-transmitted helminths divided into 2 groups. Group I treated with 50 gr. C. aeruginosa extract single dose, and group II treated with mebendazole 10 mg/kg body weight single dose. In group I. the cure rate of Ascariasis, hookworm infection, and Trichuriasis were 75 percent, 57.89 percent and 42.83 percent. In group II, the cure rates of Ascariasis, hook worm infection, and Trichuriasis were 90 percent, 84.21 percent, and 73.08 percent. No significance differences between the effect of C. aeruginosa and mebendazole for the treatment of Ascariasis (X at the power of 2 = 0.720; p more than 0.05) and hook worm infection (X at the power of 2 = 3.199; p more than 0.05), but there was significance difference found between them for the treatment of Trichuriasis (X at the power of 2 = 4.496; p less than 0.05).
