Riam Kanan watershed is an important one in South Kalimantan. It causes strategic value of Riam Kanan dam, has multi function such as electric power supply and drinking water supply for PDAM villages transportation channel, fisheries development, and recreation. On the other hand, it is a protected area, so the efforts to protect and improve the function are very important. The aims of the research are to know the exactly focused critical land as conservation and kind of conservation activities. The materials and equipment were prepared, like: Indonesia topography map, soil map, Landsat ETM, computer with solfware of GIS, GPS, ring sampler, clinometer, and compass. Geomorphology approach was used in the research in which land unit become the analysis unit. Data of land characteristic i.e: rainfall, soil physical characteristic, slope and length, and land cover were collected from each land unit to measure the sheet erosion by USLE formula. The erosion rate could be estimated by using soil depth. The research result are (1) there are 17 land units, while land unit 8 (UL-8) is dominant as much as 21.22 percent of total area, (2) the rate of critical and very critical land were dominant as much as 71,538.54 ha, (3) the conservation programs done are reforestation, social forestry, fruit plantation, and terrace building.
