Tetraploid were synthesized by inducing chromosome doubling in seedlings of Swainsona formosa using an antimitotic chemical, oryzalin (3.5-dinitro-N4,N4- dipropylsulfanilamide). Oryzalin at concentration of 0.0025-0.005 percent were found to be effective to double the chromosome number in S. formosa grown in glasshouse. Tetraploid S. formosa were bigger and stouter than their diploid relatives. In addition, leaflets of tetraploids were larger compared to diploids. The size of stomata were bigger but the number of stomata per leaf area unit were lower in tetraploids. In general, floral quality of tetraploids were improved as indicated by larger flower size and longer peduncle. Tetraploids possessed pollen with bigger diameter but lower viability than those of diploids, resulting in fewer seeds per pod.
