Effects of corn leaf position on the stem on seed filling and seed quality

An experiment was conducted at Tabing Padang West Sumatra and at the Seed Technology Laboratory Faculty of Agriculture, Andalas University during the period of May to September 2002 to determine the effects of leaf position on the stem on seed filling and seed quality of corn (Zea mays L.). The experiment was arranged in Completely Randomized Design with five treatments and three observations. The corn leaves were defoliated about 75 percent after pollination. The other 25 percent of leaves were not defoliated at different position on the stem as the treatments, that is, 25 percent of the upper most leaves, 25 percent of leaves at and above the ear, 25 percent of leaves below the ear, 25 percent of the lower most leaves, and six plants were not defoliated as a control. The result showed that the 25 percent of leaves at and above the ear play an important role in seed filling. The final seed weight of this treatment was not significantly different to the final seed weight of the plant without defoliation. Viability of seeds from these two treatments are also not significantly different. In contrast, each position of leaves which were not defoliated was not enough to support growing seed to attain high vigor. Vigor of seeds from all treatments were significantly lower compared to control.
