A study was conducted at Cikeumeuh Research Field, Bogor, in the 2001/2002 wet season. The objective of the study was (1) to compare effectiveness of bulk and pedigree methods in selection for agronomic characters such as high yield, and resistance to soybean stunt virus (SSV) of F7 soybean lines, and (2) to know direct and indirect effect of agronomic characters and soybean stunt virus resistance on F7 soybean lines yield which selecting in bulk and pedigree methods. Two groups of F7 soybean lines consisted of 30 F7 bulk lines and 30 F7 pedigree lines along with their five parental genotypes were used in the study. Each of the soybean lines and genotypes were grown in a 2 m x 3 m and 40 cm x 15 cm plant spacing. A randomized block design was used in this experiment with three replications. Effectiveness of the two selection methods were compared using t-test. A path coefficient analysis showed that there is direct and indirect effect on agronomic characters, resistance to SSV and seed yields were obtained using t test. The results showed that modification of the bulk method was better than pedigree. Results of the path analysis on both the bulk and the pedigree selection methods indicated that the number of pods per plant was directly affecting the seed yield. The number of branches per plant did not affect the yield directly, but it affected the yield indirectly through the pod number per plant. Two soybean lines B(P/M-b-7-7) and B(P/M-b-7-10) were selected as the best lines.
