Need of the teak defoliator (Hyblaea puera) control in Indonesia

Teak (Tectona grandis) is one of the most important tropical timber species. More than one million hectares of teak plantation has been established in Indonesia mostly in Java. One of the most important problem in teak management is pests and diseases. Teak defoliator, Hyblaea puera devastate teak plantation almost every year. Unfortunately, Hyblaea puera is not considered as a serious pest in Indonesia and managers of teak plantation do not take action to control the pest. Many researches, however, proved that the attack of H. puera could significantly retard the growth rate of the trees. In India and Thailand, H. puera was controlled by using parasitoid, pathogen Bacillus thuringiensis, Nuclear Polyhidrosis Virus (NPV) and extracts of neem. The teak plantation managers in Indonesia should control H. puera to avoid the loss due to the attack of the pest. Researches on using natural enemy, pathogen, and botanical insecticides to control H. puera should be done to find an effective and efficient methods in controlling the pest.
