Types of host plants, population and damaged caused by leaf miner Liriomyza huidobrensis (Blanchard) on cabbage (Brassica oleracea L.)

A survey study conducted from January until May 2003 aimed to record host plant species of leaf miner, Liriomyza huidobrensis (Blanchard), and to detect leafminer damage and population on cabbage (Brassica oleracea L.). Leafminer-infested leaves were collected from various plants in highland areas of South Sumatra for determining the leafminer host plant species. Leafminer damage recorded on cabbage leaves, and the leaves were sampled weekly to observe its damage. The population was also monitored weekly using yellow sticky traps. L. huidobrensis was a highly polyphagous insect that could infest a large number of vegetable crops and weeds. From the survey, we found 66 host plants could be infested by the leafminer. The hosts consisted of 41 crop species and 25 weed species. The population was 7-26 flies per 6 sticky traps. Foliage damage caused by the activity of L. huidobrensis larvae caused linear, irregular (serpentine), whitish or greenish mines. Foliage damage caused by the leafminer ranged 1.61-5.47 percent. Though the damage by the leafminer was low, its high population was potential to attack other crops, such as potato tomato, and beans.
