Hybridization between bread wheat genotypes to develope germplasm for southern warm and dry zone

Abstract This study was carried out to develop required genetic variation for southern dry and warm zone (Zone II) from crosses made between different bread wheat genotypes. 186 genotypes as parents were categorized in the crossing block based on different traits and characteristics. Each genotype was sown in two sowing date with 15 days interval, in 2002 - 03 cropping season and 453 crossing program were carried out. Female parents were emasculated in spring and after 48 to 72 hours were pollinated by pollens of concerned male parents. Hybrid seeds for each crossing program were harvested separately to be grown and evaluated, in the presence of concerned female parents, in the following cropping season, 2004 - 05. Seeds of F1 (147 simple crosses and 130 three way crosses) from crosses made in the previous cropping season (2002 – 03) were also grown and evaluated. Harvested F2 seeds were considered to be grown in southern warm and dry zone fiel d stations in 2004 –05. Key words: Crossing, bread wheat, origin population
