Development of tetraploid populations Resistant to Curly Top

Abstract Curly top disease is one of the most important diseases of sugar beet in the world that causes heavy lost in sugar beet cultivation in infected areas. Using resistant varieties in infected regions is one of the options to control the disease. In order to develop resistant triploid varieties, we need tetraploid tolerant pollinators and CMS diploids to make cross and produce triploid on CMS diploid. To produce tetraploid tolerant pollinators, diploid resistant sources should be treated with colchicine and be selected based on tetraploidy and tolerance in successive generations. Based on germplasm evaluation in different years, 4 diploid multigerm genotypes with acceptable tolerance to the disease have been selected. Some tolerant single plants have been chosen from each of them and being used for seed production in isolated plots (16396-66, 16398-66, 16401-66, 16402-66). To produce tolerant tetraploid populations, selected genotypes were entered into tetraploidy process. Tetraploid populations along with domesticate and foreign genotypes have been compared in infected area. Results of analysis of technologic characteristics showed that tetraploid populations have acted similar to resistant checks of trail and considered as superior treatments of trail.
