Studding of labor use state in production and conversion of Sugar beet in Iran

Sugar beet is one of the main crops in Iran that provide primary materials for sugar industries and so, its economic aspects are very important. One of these aspects is employment. It has begged to draw policy maker attentions. Nevertheless, there isn't any survey study in this matter in Iran yet. In this study was identified current and optimal value of labor use in sugar beet cultivation (direct employment) in Esfahan, Khorasan, Fars and Kerman-shah states. Data were gathered by using stratified random sampling and complete farm accounting questionnaire for different technologies levels and climates. Then, needed labors of sugar beet transfer to sugar industries and produce the products (sugar, Molasses and so on) from sugar beet (forward employment) steps were calculated. Data for these steps gathered by complete the questionnaires for each on, too. Results showed average use of labor in working, drivers and manager classes is 157.04 man-day in Esfahan. This value is 121.41, 134.55 and 149.08 in Khorasan, Fars and Kerman-shah, respectively. Maximum uses of labors were in weeding, harvesting and irrigation activities. Other results showed average use of labor in all of studied state is 43.68 man-day for one ton of gross sugar yield with 31.03 (71.04%),3.322 (8.08%) and 9.119 (20.87%) man-day for sugar beet cultivation, transfer and conversion of sugar beet steps, respectively. Minimum use of labor for one ton of gross sugar yield was in Khorasan (33.24 man-day) and maximum was in Fars (60.275 man-day). Furthermore, average use of labor was 7.15 man-day for one ton of gross sugar yield in all steps and states. This value was 212.48 man-day and 1.41 man-year per one hectar and 253207 man-year in Iran
