In the present work the development of the buffalo lingual papillae and taste buds was studied using scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM and TEM), light microscopy (LM) and immunohistochemistry (IHC). The results show that the vascular and nervous components manage the development of the lingual gustatory papillae (papillae circumvallatae and papillae fungiformes), while they precede the development of mechanical papillae. Besides, the two components of the nervous supply of the gustatory papillae (mandibular branch of trigeminal nerve and glossopharyngeal nerve) show different organization in relation to the type of gustatory papilla they innervate

[Nel presente lavoro è stato studiato lo sviluppo delle papille linguali e delle gemme gustative del bufalo utilizzando la microscopia elettronica a scansione (SEM) e a trasmissione (TEM), la microscopia ottica (LM) e l'immunoistochimica (IHC). I risultati dimostrano che le componenti vascolare e nervosa regolano lo sviluppo delle papille legate alla funzione gustativa (papillae circumvallatae e papillae fungiformes), mentre precedono lo sviluppo delle papille a funzione meccanica. Inoltre, le due componenti del contingente nervoso coinvolto nella formazione delle papille gustative (branca mandibolare del trigemino e nervo glossofaringeo) presentano organizzazione diversa in relazione al tipo di papilla gustativa che innervano.]
