Effects of some illicit drug treatments upon the oxidative P450-dependent metabolism in the liver of veal calves: preliminary results

English. In this paper, the effects of two illicit cocktails upon the liver P450-dependent drug metabolism of veal calves were investigated. Both P450 content and catalytical activities of main P450 isoforms were never affected by the treatments, even though some differences, compared to controls, were noticed for certain isoforms (CYP1A, CYP2B, CYP3A). These preliminary results seem to confirm that the administration of forbidden drugs to cattle might affect the expression of drug metabolising enzymes: however, more studies are required to confirm or not such a behaviour, particularly at the gene- or protein-level. This would permit an increasing effectiveness of screening analytical methods to ensure the animal welfare and the human safety

[In questo lavoro sono stati studiati gli effetti di due cocktail illegali sull'espressione degli enzimi farmaco-metabolizzanti P450-dipendenti nel fegato di vitelli a carne bianca. Sia il contenuto di P450, sia le attività catalitiche delle principali isoforme P450-dipendenti non sono mai stati influenzati dai trattamenti, sebbene siano state notate alcune differenze, rispetto ai controlli, per certe isoforme (CYP1A, CYP2B, CYP3A). Questi risultati preliminari sembrano confermare che la somministrazione di farmaci proibiti ai bovini potrebbe influenzare l'espressione degli enzimi farmaco-metabolizzanti: tuttavia, sono necessari ulteriori studi per confermare tale comportamento, in particolare a livello di gene o proteina. Questo permetterebbe di migliorare l'efficacia dei metodi analitici di screening, per garantire il benessere degli animali e la salute dei consumatori.]
