Determination of optimum paddy moisture content ( Var. Hashemi and Taroom ) in rice milling factory in Gilan prov.

In milling process, moisture content of rough rice plays up not only an important role on the amount of rice breakage, but also on quality of out come. Paddy resistance is affected to a high extent to moisture content with respect to incoming pressures over milling operation. To achieve the least breakage , it becomes a necessity determination of rice moisture content. Therefore, appropriate moisture content to be used for milling operation determined for two rice cultivars named Hashemi and Taroom. Grains were dried to a range of 7 to 14 percent by means of a batch-type grain dryer at the temperature about 43ْ C. Then, they were milled by a common system of a rubber roller and an blade-type whitener. Determining percentage of broken kernels and the degree of whiteness was done as well. The results revealed that the broken rice of Hashemi decreased as moisture content of paddy reduced. The optimum moisture content levels of paddy were 7-8% and 8-10% w.b. for Hashemi and Taroom, respectively. The highest degree of whiteness was obtained at the moisture content of 8-9% for Hashemi, whereas it was at 7-8% for Taroom. According to the milling yield test, without considering moisture content, it was showed that the highest value of milling outturn was at th moisture content levels of 7-8% and 9-10% w.b. for Hashemi and taroom varieties , respectively. However, by taking account of rice moisture content for both cultivars, milling yield increased when the moisture content of rough rice decreased.
