The behaviour of the lactating sow as affected by two different feeding techniques

In order to evaluate the behavioural effects of two different feeding techniques, 30 lactating sows were homogeneously allocated to two groups: T1, in which animal received a dry meal at fixed times (8:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.), that was ad libitum offered for 30 minutes, and T2, in which sows received a liquid feed available over the whole day (from 6:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.). Sows belonging to group T2 ate more feed (P0.01). Although differences in mean values were not significant (P0.05), number of piglets weaned per sow and body weight of piglets at weaning were higher for T2 sows. With regard to behavioural patterns, T2 sows spent more time standing and engaged in eating (P0.001) and showed improved welfare conditions, as demonstrated by a reduction of abnormal behaviours such as sitting (P0.01) and bar biting (P0.01). [Allo scopo di valutare gli effetti sul comportamento di due tecniche di alimentazione diverse, 30 scrofe allattanti sono state suddivise in due gruppi: T1, in cui gli animali ricevevano l'alimento in forma secca due volte al giorno (ore 8:30 e ore 16:00), disponibile ad libitum per 30 minuti, e T2, in cui le scrofe ricevevano lo stesso alimento in forma liquida, disponibile in maniera continuativa durante il giorno (dalle ore 6:00 alle ore 23:00). Le scrofe del gruppo T2 hanno ingerito una maggiore quantità di alimento (P0,01). Sebbene le differenze nei valori medi non fossero significative (P0,05), il numero di suinetti svezzati per scrofa e il peso corporeo dei suinetti sono risultati maggiori per le scrofe T2. Riguardo ai rilievi comportamentali, le scrofe T2 hanno trascorso un tempo maggiore in stazione quadrupedale e a utilizzare la mangiatoia (P0,001) e mostravano uno stato di maggiore benessere, come dimostrato dalla riduzione di comportamenti anomali come la posizione seduta (P0,01) e la morsicatura delle sbarre (P0,01).
