Rabbit meat production: weaning at 28 days vs weaning at 63 days. 2: Commercial characteristics of carcasses

The influence of weaning age on rabbit meat production was investigated on a total of 192 crossbred rabbits (New Zealand White x Californian) divided in 2 experimental groups: 96 subjects weaned at 28 d (W 28 d) and 96 at 63 d (W 63 d) and all slaughtered at 83 d. Carcasses were prepared and weighted. After refrigeration at 2 deg C for 24 h, carcasses were classified and main linear measurements were carried out. Rabbit carcasses were then dissected to measure fat content and muscle to bone ratio. Live weight at slaughter and dressing out percentage of carcasses were significantly higher in W 28 d compared to W 63 d (2,167 vs 1,837 g; P0.01) (59.71 vs 51.71%; P0.05). At dissection, also meat to bone ratio resulted higher in W 28 d carcasses than in W 63 d (7.54 vs 6.28; P0.01). The weaning age is confirmed to be a considerable variable with reference to the quantitative aspects of the rabbit meat production

[L'effetto dell'età di svezzamento sulle prestazioni produttive del coniglio da carne è stato studiato su 192 conigli ibridi (Bianca di Nuova Zelanda x Californiana) divisi in due gruppi sperimentali: 96 soggetti svezzati a 28 giorni (W 28 d) e 96 a 63 d (W 63 d), tutti macellati a 83 giorni. Le carcasse sono state preparate e pesate. Dopo refrigerazione a 2 gradi C per 24 h, le stesse sono state classificate e sono state effettuate le principali misurazioni lineari. Successivamente, sono state dissezionate e spolpate per misurare il contenuto di grasso e il rapporto muscolo/ossa. Il peso vivo alla macellazione e la resa di macellazione sono risultati significativamente più elevati in W 28 d rispetto a W 63 d (2.167 vs 1.837 g; P0,01) (59,71 vs 51,71%; P0,05). Alla dissezione, pure il rapporto muscolo/ossa è risultato superiore nelle carcasse W 28 d rispetto alle W 63 d (7,54 vs 6,28; P0,01). Si conferma che l'età di svezzamento è una variabile importante in riferimento agli aspetti quantitativi della produzione di carne del coniglio.]
