After a short historic introduction, the Italian version of the paper of the German chemist Adolf Mayer, which was published in 1886 in German version and in 1942 in English translation, is presented. In his paper Mayer described for the first time a severe disease ravaging the tobacco growing that Mayer named tobacco mosaic disease; by utilising Koch's postulates, the German chemist concluded that: 1) tobacco mosaic was an infectious disease and 2) the causal agent was of bacterial origin. Mayer's paper started a series of subsequent researches on the agent of the disease, which ended with the discovery of the paradigmatic virus of either plant or general virology, Tobacco Mosaic Virus

Viene presentato, dopo una breve introduzione storica, il lavoro del chimico tedesco Adolf Mayer, pubblicato nel 1886 in versione tedesca e nel 1942 in versione inglese, tradotto in lingua italiana. In tale lavoro, Mayer condusse alcune ricerche su una grave malattia, da lui definita mosaico del tabacco, che stava producendo in quegli anni gravi danni alla tabacchicoltura. Utilizzando i criteri di Koch, Mayer dimostrò il carattere infettivo della malattia, giungendo a stabilirne un'eziologia batterica.
