Post-harvest alternative disease control means on pome fruits [apple; pears]

Among the postharvest fungal diseases, blue mould caused by Pencillium expansum, grey mould caused by Botrytis cinerea, Mucor rot caused by Mucor piriformis, bitter rot caused by Phlyctema vagabunda Desm. (ex Gloeosporium album) are common on pome fruits. In the past, postharvest fungicide treatments were used to reduce decay, but their effectiveness decreased with the appearance of resistant strains. In addition, the deregistration of some other effective compounds and the increasing public concern on pesticides stimulated the search for alternative strategies. At present, the emerging technologies for non-conventional control of postharvest fungal diseases are: application of antagonist microorganisms, natural antimicrobial substances, generally regarded as safe (GRAS), and hot water treatments. Biofungicides as Aspire (Candida oleophila), BIO-Save 100 (Pseudomonas syringae), Serenade (Bacillus subtilis) have been registered in US for postharvest applications on pome fruits and their registration in Europe is in progress. The future of antagonists will depend overall on product formulation and compatibility with current handling and storage practices. Detailed studies have been conducted on natural substances such as trans-2-hexanal and allyl-isothiocyanate, acting as volatile compounds. In particular, a curative activity of trans-2-hexanal and the antifungal activity of allyl-isothiocyanate on a thiabendazole resistant strain of P. expansum was shown. However, GRAS treatments, when used alone, do not provide satisfactory levels of decay control. They appeared to be very effective when applied in combination with antagonists or heat, resulting in an additive effect of decay control. I principali agenti patogeni che colpiscono le pomacee nella fase post-raccolta sono Penicillium expansum Link, agente della muffa verde-azzurra, Botrytis cinerea Pers., agente della muffa grigia, Mucor piriformis Fischer, agente del marciume acquoso, Phlyctema vagabunda Desm. (ex Gloeosporium album), agente del marciume lenticellare. La lotta a questi patogeni, un tempo condotta quasi esclusivamente con fungicidi di sintesi, ora richiede l'individuazione di mezzi alternativi; tra questi, riveste un certo interesse l'uso di antagonisti, di sostanze naturali, di additivi alimentari e della termoterapia. Alcuni biofungicidi, come Aspire, a base di Candida oleophila, BIO-Save 100, a base di Pseudomonas syringae, Serenade, a base di Bacillus subtilis, sono autorizzati negli Stati Uniti per l'impiego in postraccolta e sono in via di registrazione in Europa. Il futuro commerciale di questi e di altri microorganismi che sono in fase di studio dipende principalmente da un'idonea formulazione e dalla loro compatibilità con le tecniche di lavorazione e conservazione dei frutti. Sono stati condotti studi approfonditi su sostanze naturali come trans-2-esenale and allil-isotiocianato, che agiscono come composti volatili.
