The relation between heavy metals distribution and particle size fractions in some Egyptian soils

English. Soil as a part of the environment receives pollutants from all types of human activities. Heavy metals originating from various organic waste sources and industrial activities accumulate in the soil surface and their fate depends not only on the types and amounts of waste applied, but also on soil properties. Furthermore, soils differ in their retention power for various heavy or trace elements. Twelve soil samples were selected from different sites irrigated with industrial and sewage wastes at Helwan City (Cairo Governorate) in the North and El-Saff (Giza Governorate) in the South. Separation of clay, silt and sand fractions was carried out. Chemical analyses of trace elements in the form of total and available contents (Fe, Mn, Zn and Pb) were carried out in each fraction. The results show that the average amounts of heavy metals in different fractions are related to the particle size of the soil, especially the fine fraction. Heavy metals content was always in the surface layers higher than sub-surface. All metals were highest in clay fraction, followed by silt and sand fractions. The importance of the fine fractions in the accumulation of heavy metals by coordination number in the lattice structure is discussed

I metalli pesanti che derivano da varie fonti di rifiuti organici e da attività industriali si accumulano sulla superficie del suolo e il loro destino dipende non solo dai tipi e dalle quantità di rifiuti distribuiti, ma anche dalle proprietà del suolo. Inoltre, i suoli differiscono per quanto riguarda il potere di ritenzione di vari metalli pesanti o microelementi. Dodici campioni di terreno sono stati prelevati da siti diversi irrigati con reflui industriali e fanghi attivati a Helwan (governatorato del Cairo) nel Nord e a El-Saff (Governatorato di Giza) nel Sud. E' stata effettuata la separazione delle frazioni argillosa, limosa e sabbiosa. Su ogni frazione sono state effettuate le analisi chimiche dei contenuti di microelementi totali e disponibili (Fe, Mn, Zn e Pb). I risultati mostrano che i contenuti medi dei metalli pesanti nelle diverse frazioni sono in relazione alla granulometria del suolo, specialmente la frazione fine. Tutti i metalli presentavano il contenuto più elevato nella frazione argillosa, seguita dalle frazioni limosa e sabbiosa. Viene discussa l'importanza delle frazioni fini nell'accumulo dei metalli pesanti in relazione al numero di coordinazione nella struttura reticolare.]
