Pests on turfgrass in Italy

English. In Italy about twenty insect species infesting turf grass in green areas, golf courses and football fields are listed. The most important species belong to Lepidoptera Noctuidae [Agrotis ipsilon (Hfn.) and Agrotis segetum (Den. et Schiff.)], to Coleoptera Scarabaeidae [Amphimallon solstitiale (L.)] and Curculionidae [Sphenophorus striatopunctatus (Goeze)] and to Diptera Tipulidae (Tipula spp.). At present, the knowledge on these species is still incomplete, especially data on economic thresholds are missing. Moreover, indirect damages, due to vertebrates, such as rooks and wild boars, searching ground dwelling larvae, occur. The pest management relies on IPM practices. Cultural practices such as use of selected species and varieties, appropriate fertilization and irrigation and all the agronomic techniques improving the health of turf grass play a key role in preventing insect infestations. Biological insecticides, such as entomopathogenic nematodes and Bacillus thuringiensis, or pesticides can be used only if the preventive measures are inadequate
Show more [+] Less [-]Italian. In Italia sono note una ventina di specie dannose ai tappeti erbosi di parchi, giardini e campi sportivi. Quelle veramente importanti sono ristrette ad alcuni Lepidotteri Nottuidi [Agrotis ipsilon (Hfn.) e Agrotis segetum (Den. et Schiff.)], a Coleotteri Scarabeidi [Amphimallon solstitiale (L.)], Curculionidi [Sphenophorus striatopunctatus (Goeze)] e Ditteri Tipulidi (Tipula spp.). Le conoscenze su queste specie sono comunque ancora poco approfondite e mancano chiare indicazioni soprattutto sulle soglie di intervento. Ai danni diretti se ne aggiungono spesso altri dovuti a vertebrati, specialmente cinghiali e cornacchie, che si nutrono degli insetti. La gestione dei fitofagi deve basarsi su pratiche di lotta integrata. Particolare attenzione va data a misure preventive, come le scelte varietali, la concimazione, l'irrigazione. Queste vanno integrate, quando necessario, con interventi curativi con formulati biologici (Bacillus thuringiensis, nematodi entomopatogeni) e, solo come ultima risorsa, con antiparassitari di sintesi
