Using QuickBird images for annual monitoring of forestland [Latium]

English. The annual assessment of forestland is generally carried out at an administrative level by recording the occurred events. In Italy the forest areas subjected to harvesting are registered by the Italian National Institute of Statistics; however, various AA point out some shortcomings in the adopted census procedure. Very high resolution remote sensing images allow to test multitemporal and multispectral objective analyses and to evaluate events occurred within the forestland. The aim of this note is to present the results of an experimentation of a multitemporal normalized index, to identify cutting areas in coppice woods performed in a year, using very high resolution satellite images. The index was calculated for a couple of multitemporal QuickBird satellite images for a test area of 2,215 ha in Northern Latium (Italy). The identified cutting areas were compared with the official administrative data, recorded according to the conventional procedures. The potential of the proposed procedure was assessed by object oriented classification techniques. The results highlight the effectiveness of the proposed method for the quantification of the events occurred in the tested area
Show more [+] Less [-]Italian. I cambiamenti annuali delle superfici forestali sono generalmente rilevati a livello amministrativo tramite registrazione degli eventi occorsi. In particolare, in Italia, i dati riguardanti le utilizzazioni forestali sono raccolti negli Annuari ISTAT, di cui tuttavia vari AA segnalano presunte inadeguatezze. Ai fini del monitoraggio delle superfici forestali, il telerilevamento ad alta risoluzione consente di eseguire oggettive analisi multitemporali e multispettrali degli eventi occorsi. Scopo di questa nota è presentare i risultati di una sperimentazione di un indice multitemporale normalizzato per l'individuazione e la perimetrazione delle tagliate nei boschi governati a ceduo eseguite nell'arco temporale di un anno, sulla base di immagini satellitari ad alta risoluzione. L'indice è calcolato su una coppia di immagini multitemporali QuickBird, acquisite per un'area di studio estesa circa 2.215 ha nell'Alto Lazio. Le superfici delle tagliate individuate sono confrontate con i dati dichiarati a livello amministrativo secondo le correnti procedure. La valutazione dell'indice è effettuata tramite tecniche di classificazione object oriented. I risultati ottenuti mostrano l'utilità della procedura proposta nel quantificare gli eventi occorsi alle superfici forestali analizzate
