Glass microspheres covering film: first field evaluations [greenhouses; vegetable crops]]

English. A trial was carried out to evaluate, in the North-Centre of Italy, the behaviour in field of a new plastic covering film, prepared with the inclusion of empty glass microspheres (Solex). The trial was conducted on tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum L.) and eggplant (Solanum melongena L.). The new film was compared to a covering film with the same optical (diffuse light) and constitutional (co-extruded three layers EVA-WPE) characteristics. Since the first results, the innovative film showed a better behaviour than the control one. It presented light and thermal conditions (lower temperature during the day and slightly higher temperature in the night, compared to the control film) that allowed a better growth and yield than the control film. The growth analysis of tomato showed that plants grown under glass microsphere film had an higher growth rate (dry weight/days) and thickness of leaves compared to the control one. The yield of tomato and eggplant presented an increase in plants cultivated under the innovative film, especially for number and weight of fruits. The commercial quality did not show any differences between the films, except for the flesh hardness of tomato: this could be explained with the fact that the glass microspheres film provides environmental conditions avoiding plant stress during some stages of its cycle

Per valutare, in un ambiente tipico dell'Italia Centro-Settentrionale, un nuovo film di copertura, preparato con l'inclusione di microsfere cave di vetro (tipo Solex), è stata condotta una sperimentazione in serra fredda su due ortive, pomodoro da mensa (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) e melanzana (Solanum melongena L.). Il film innovativo, a luce diffratta, è stato confrontato con un materiale di copertura ad alto potere diffondente, riguardo alla radiazione solare, e a elevate caratteristiche ottico-radiometriche, analogo al primo per natura polimerica e per costituzione stratigrafica (coestruso a tre strati LDPE-EVA). Il film ha dimostrato un migliore comportamento agronomico rispetto al testimone. Alle condizioni luminose e termiche determinate dal film contenente microsfere di vetro all'interno di tunnel (minori picchi di temperatura durante le ore del giorno, minime notturne, seppur di poco, superiori rispetto a quelle registrate sotto la copertura più tradizionale) è corrisposto sia un miglioramento dello stato vegetativo della pianta, sia un più alto risultato produttivo. Le piante sotto il film con microsfere di vetro presentavano un più elevato rapporto tra peso secco della pianta e numero dei giorni, oltre a un maggiore spessore della foglia, i cui tessuti contenevano più clorofilla. Le produzioni conseguite sotto la copertura realizzata con il film preparato con le microsfere vetrose sono apparse più alte in entrambe le ortive, soprattutto per il numero e per il peso totale delle bacche. In alcuni casi, anche la qualità del prodotto è stata favorevolmente influenzata da tale materiale, in particolare i frutti di pomodoro maturati sotto il film con microsfere di vetro hanno presentato una maggiore consistenza della polpa; ciò potrebbe forse essere dovuto al fatto che la crescita dei frutti all'interno di questa copertura avvengono in condizioni tali da ridurre lo stress cui la pianta è sottoposta durante alcune fasi del ciclo
