English. Helmut Schmitz, a scientist at the University of Bonn, Germany, has taken the idea from a small insect. Schmitz and his colleagues of the University of Berkeley, California, have built a prototype that can detect, as the beetles sensors, infrared radiation emitted from forest fires. The European jewel beetle, Melanophila acuminata, is equipped with biological receptors capable of detecting infrared sources even at great distances. Schmitz says that this technology may be applied in many fields where technical infrared sensors are used. An important application of these new infrared sensors may be in the monitoring of large forest areas and in triggering an early warning in the event of fire
