Step-pool channels: analogies with streambeds stabilised through grade-control structures [Trentino; South Tyrol; Veneto]

English. High-gradient streams (slope3-5%) often exhibit a naturally-formed staircase morphology, called step-pool. On the other hand, typical river training that uses sequences of grade-control structures such as check dams and bed sills leads to the establishment of an analogous stepped longitudinal profile. In spite of a general agreement on the origin of natural pool, being due to the local scouring action downstream of steps, few studies have addressed the problem of their dimensions as a function of hydraulic and sedimentological properties. In order to validate the hypothesis that natural pools and pools formed below grade-control works present analogies with respect to their dimensions and shape, 43 natural pools and 79 artificial pools were surveyed in 11 mountain streams of the Eastern Italian Alps. When main geometric features such as maximum depth and length were normalized to the jet nominal energy, no statistically significant differences were detected between the two groups. Further, it was found that maximum pool depth roughly corresponds to the jet energy. Step spacing, if normalized in the same way, results to be not different statistically from the artificial structure-downstream berm distance. These evidences might have noteworthy implications for the dynamics of step-pool geometry

D'altra parte, la tipica sistemazione basata su sequenze di strutture di consolidamento dell'alveo come briglie e soglie porta a ottenere un profilo longitudinale a gradinata analogo. Nonostante vi sia una unitarietà di punti di vista sull'origine del pool naturale, dovuta all'azione locale di dilavamento a valle dei gradini, pochi studi hanno affrontato il problema delle loro dimensioni in funzione delle caratteristiche idrauliche e dei sedimenti. Allo scopo di confermare l'ipotesi che i pool naturali e i pool formati al di sotto di opere di controllo della pendenza presentano analogie rispetto alle dimensioni e alla forma, sono stati esaminati 43 pool naturali e 79 pool artificiali in 11 torrenti delle Alpi Orientali. Quando le principali caratteristiche geometriche come la profondità e la lunghezza massima erano normalizzate rispetto all'energia nominale del getto, non si osservavano differenze statisticamente significative fra i due gruppi. Inoltre, si è riscontrato che la profondità massima del pool corrisponde approssimativamente all'energia del getto. La spaziatura dello step, se normalizzata nello stesso modo, non risulta statisticamente diversa dalla struttura artificiale-distanza della berma a valle. Queste evidenze potrebbero avere implicazioni di rilievo per la dinamica della geometria a step-pool.]
