English. In Italy, as well as in other European Countries, the rural compartment is undergoing dramatic changes. Therefore, new land use systems are sought in order to resolve many problems, such as agricultural surpluses, good quality timber shortage, alternative use of marginal lands, biodiversity erosion and global climatic changes. New agroforestry systems may affect positively these problems and particularly silvoarable systems, where the consociation between arable crops and widely spaced tree rows could be more profitable and environmentally friendly. Notwithstanding, there are still some uncertainties. The SAFE project has demonstrated that new agro-forestry systems are compatible with the modern agricultural technique and might be profitable especially compared to forest plantation. For these purposes, biophysical and economic models have been constructed; the research, carried out in 12 land test units in 5 different European regions, has showed that the models are an important tool to choice species, intercrop rotation and management techniques as well as to predict the silvoarable activities future income

Si ricercano perciò nuovi sistemi di uso dei terreni allo scopo di risolvere molti problemi, come i surplus agricoli, la carenza di legname di buona qualità, l'uso alternativo delle terre marginali, l'erosione della biodiversità e i cambiamenti globali del clima. Nuovi sistemi agro-forestali possono contribuire a risolvere questi problemi, in particolare i sistemi silvoarabili, dove la consociazione fra colture erbacee e filari di piante notevolmente distanziati potrebbe risultare più redditizia ed ecocompatibile. Ciononostante, esistono ancora molte incertezze. Il progetto SAFE ha dimostrato che i nuovi sistemi agro-forestali sono compatibili con la moderna tecnica agricola e potrebbero essere redditizi, specialmente rispetto alla piantagione forestale. A questo fine sono stati costruiti modelli biofisici ed economici; la ricerca, condotta in 12 unità sperimentali di 5 Paesi europei, ha dimostrato che i modelli sono uno strumento importante per scegliere le specie, la rotazione colturale e le tecniche di gestione, come pure per prevedere il reddito futuro delle attività silvoarabili.]
