Seed production of native ornamentals within the Wildflowers project [Tuscany]

The Wildflowers Project, co-founded by the Regional Agency for Development and Innovation in Agriculture and Forestry of Toscana (ARSIA) and coordinated by the National Research Council of Pisa, aimed at studying the ecology of native herbaceous species suitable for urban naturalistic plantings, to promote their cultivation techniques and to produce seeds to be commercially released. The project includes: a) the propagation of the mother-plants in a nursery from seeds harvested in natural areas to avoid the risk of intra-hybridization with the local ecotypes once planted in rural landscapes; b) the planting of the seedlings in the open field by a local farm; c) the harvest and the distribution of mixes by a local seed company. One of the major obstacles in developing the present project is the, up to now, scarce interest by private companies in wildflowers and in the connected seed production activity. On the other hand, the necessity to utilize genetic material of local provenance to setting up the study and to apply this cultural technique for natural and urban areas recovery supported the decision to start up the seed production. Their availability on the market is needed in order to propose this technique to public administrations, landscape designer and managers. The production of local wildflower seeds represents a low-cost technique to manage green areas and to contribute to the biodiversity maintenance and a useful tool for the conservation of species at the risk of extinction (e.g. Centaurea cyanus, Agrostemma githago)

Nell'ambito del progetto Wildflowers, co-finanziato da ARSIA e Regione Toscana e coordinato da ISE-CNR di Pisa, sono state sviluppate due linee di lavoro, parallele ma fortemente integrate: lo studio delle specie erbacee spontanee da utilizzare in impianti naturalistici per scopi ornamentali e la diffusione delle tecniche di coltivazione e la produzione delle sementi delle specie risultate più interessanti. La filiera avviata dal progetto prevede la produzione di piante madri da semi raccolti localmente, il trapianto dei semenzali in pieno campo, la raccolta dei semi, la loro preparazione e la distribuzione da parte di una ditta sementiera. Uno dei maggiori ostacoli nello sviluppo del progetto è stato lo scarso interesse, finora manifestato, alle piante ornamentali spontanee e alla relativa produzione di sementi da parte delle ditte sementiere. D'altra parte, la necessità di utilizzare materiale genetico di provenienza locale per sviluppare lo studio e per applicare questa tecnica colturale al recupero delle aree verdi urbane ha motivato la decisione di avviare la produzione dei semi. In questo modo, oltre a rendere possibile l'utilizzazione di una tecnica a basso costo per la gestione di aree verdi ornamentali e a contribuire al mantenimento della biodiversità, si fornisce un utile strumento per la conservazione e la reintroduzione di specie spontanee a rischio di scomparsa, quali, per esempio, Centaurea cyanus e Agrostemma githago
