[Rodents are mobile vectors of pathogenic agents with viral, bacterial, protozoan or parasite aetiology: their role in transmission is supported by adaptation capabilities and ability to reach feedstuffs and the most safe haunts; in all other situations, they cause an environmental imbalance, favouring pathogens and disadvantaging swine, as a invading or aggressive presence for younger animals. Basic zoological and ethologic information for the two major rat species (Rattus norvegicus and Rattus rattus) and for mouse (Mus musculus) is reported; after some remarks on qualities and faults of different rodenticide classes, basic information on Integrated Pest Management protocol and on its practical aspects is reported.]

I roditori sono vettori mobili di numerosi agenti patogeni ad eziologia virale, batterica, protozoaria e parassitaria: il loro ruolo nella trasmissione è favorito dalle capacità d'adattamento e dall'abilità nel raggiungere le derrate alimentari e i rifugi più sicuri; in tutte le altre situazioni, essi rappresentano un fattore condizionante lo squilibrio ambientale, a vantaggio dei patogeni e a sfavore dei suini, sotto forma di presenza invadente o aggressiva per gli animali più giovani. Sono riportate le informazioni zoologiche ed etologiche di base per le due principali specie di ratti (Rattus norvegicus e Rattus rattus) e per il topo (Mus musculus); dopo aver considerato pregi e difetti delle diverse categorie di rodenticidi, sono fornite le informazioni di base sul protocollo denominato Integrated Pest Management e sulle fasi pratiche operative
