We developed a new perilla cultivar 'Ai-Kei-1-go' by crossing a commercial cultivar 'Ao-Chirimen Shiso' bred by Asahi-Nouen Co. and 'Nousoushi II' which is one of production cultivars in the eastern area of Aichi prefecture. 'Ao-Chirimen Shiso' is a Corynespora leaf spot resistant cultivar as we reported in the former paper (Res.Bull.Aichi Agric.Res.Ctr.32). 'Ao-Chirimen Shiso' was crossed with 'Nousoushi II' in February 2000. F4 progeny 99-146-220-439 was obtained through selections about growth, quality of products, leaf spot resistance and perillaldehyde content which is a major component of perilla fragrance. Taxonomical and practical characteristics of the F5 progeny were investigated in the agricultural research center and production area in summer and winter growing seasons. F5 has as good vegetation and flavor as production cultivars and better leaf shape in summer. It also has excellent characteristics of late flower initiation and less anthocyanin coloration. This line was applied for the registration of variety in 2006 as 'Ai-Kei-1-go'.
