There are several companies manufacturing barley tea in Kyusyu, Japan. Recently some barley tea traders want to produce six-rowed barley tea. Six-rowed barley shows cold resistance. However, it is susceptible to Fusarium blight. It has been proposed for hilly and mountainous area cultivation. We researched varieties of six-rowed barley in 2002-2005. We propose 'Shunrai', as a suitable six-rowed barley for traders of this tea. Some characters and the cultivation method of 'Shunrai' are as follows regarding hilly and mountainous areas in Oita prefecture, Japan. 1. 'Shunrai' is I type of the degree of winter habit, and normal-type variety. The jointing stage is late, so it can avoid young panicle death due to cold weather. 2. 'Shunrai' is an early variety. The heading and maturation dates are the same as in 'Asamamugi'. Also, 'Shunrai' is of large grain and high yield. 3. The inspection grade is slightly superior to 'Asamamugi'. And the protein content is slightly lower. 4. 'Shunrai' is highly resistant to Fusarium blight and Powdery mildew, and exhibits high lodging resistance 5. The sowing rate is good at 0.7 kg/a by a sowing seeder in the last ten-days of October, but in the case of the second ten-days of November, it must be up to 0.9 kg/a for the last sowing period. 6. The amounts of nitrogen fertilizer application of basal dressing and topdressing at panicle formation stage are effective up to 0.4 kg/a, respectively. However, if grain protein content was low, about 0.2 kg/a of nitrogen fertilizer should be added at the topdressing ripening stage
