This study clarifies the characteristics of 'Toyonokaze', for cultivation in Oita Prefecture, and its excellent properties in miso production. The results can be summarized as follows: 1) 'Toyonokaze' belongs to the early maturing group of six-rowed naked barley and matures similarly in 'Ichibanboshi'. 2) Although 'Toyonokaze' has a high winter habit, its heading date is very early. So, it is necessary to avoid early seeding, and 'Toyonokaze' is well adapted to low elevations. 3) The culm length of 'Toyonokaze' is longer than that of 'Ichibanboshi'. 4) The panicle length of 'Toyonokaze' is equal to that of 'Ichibanboshi'. 5) The panicle number of 'Toyonokaze' is slightly less than that of 'Ichibanboshi'. 6) 'Toyonokaze' has a higher yield than that of 'Ichibanboshi'. 7) The 1,000-grain weight of 'Toyonokaze' is equal to that of 'Ichibahboshi'. 8) The proper seeding rate ranges from 0.5 kg/a and the application method of nitorogen is as follows: 0.4 kg/a (basal dressing), 0.2 kg/a (top dressing at tillering stage), and 0.3 kg (ear manuring). 9) The lodging resistance of 'Toyonokaze' is equal to that of 'Ichibanboshi'. 10) The resistance of 'Toyonokaze' to scab is equal to that of 'Ichibanboshi'. 11) The degree of decoloration of 'Toyonokaze' is slightly higher than that of 'Ichibanboshi'.
