Recent prevalence of feline coronavirus, feline immunodeficiency virus and feline leukemia virus infections in Japan

To investigate the prevalence of feline coronavirus (FCoV), feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) and feline leukemia virus (FeLV) infections in recent years, a total of 1,358 sera of clinically healthy domestic cats, which were collected from wide areas of Japan between February and April in 2001, were tested for anti-FCoV antibody, anti-FIV antibody and FeLV antigen. The positive rates of FCoV, FIV and FeLV were 36.2, 14.1 and 5.6%, respectively, and the rates have no tendency to decrease compared with the previous reports. This finding indicates that these viruses are still contagious and clinically considerable in Japan. By area, the rate of FeLV in the Kyushu district (20.8%) was significantly higher than the overall rate (5.6%)(p0.0001), although no significant differences were observed in the rates of FCoV and FeLV in each district. However, the reason for this fact is unclear in this study. This phenomenon needs to be investigated further with larger numbers of samples.
